Food for the Hungry Advocates

John BatesBeing a Food for the Hungry Advocate is my opportunity to make a difference in the world. I see the power of Christ working through me to touch hurting children. Last spring I dropped by several local churches and simply asked the pastors if they would allow me to present Food for the Hungry to their congregations.  Three different churches said yes.  I spoke for 5-10 minutes in front of the congregations and showed a Food for the Hungry DVD. A total of 12 kids were sponsored! That’s twelve kids who will get education, healthcare, the chance to hear the Gospel and a sponsor half way across the world who is praying for them.  These 12 kids now know they matter. It was so easy. I realize now that I could have been doing this years ago, and I wish I would have started sooner.

ConwaysAt first, my church was a bit skeptical when I introduced them to Food for the Hungry’s Community to Community (C2C) church partnership program.  But they got to know FH, and realized that focusing on one community just made sense.  Our mission statement is “To focus our efforts on specific areas to make a large difference rather than spreading our time and resources thinly.”  Our C2C relationship is with Karbururi, Kenya.  Church members started sponsoring Karbururi’s children, and that is what really got us connected. On our short term trip to Karbururi, God's work was pretty easy to spot.  In a harsh environment, the local community is excited about what is happening in their community.  The children are learning in a Christ centered environment when there are Muslim families all around. We met a little girl who had been bitten by a puff adder.  She was the first recipient of medical aid from the FH program, and may not have lived if FH wasn’t there.  In a very real way, our church is in Karbururi, too, and we’re planning to stay long term!

Michelle BakerGod was calling me to do more than sponsoring a child, He was calling me to help other kids get sponsored, too. Each church presentation I have made has been different, but I give God all the glory because He has given me the words to say. I try to help people understand what the kids’ lives are like overseas, and the impact sponsorship makes.  When someone signs up to sponsor, I tell them “Don’t think you aren’t making a difference! You are making a difference in this child’s life!” I have gotten 13 kids sponsored so far, but I know that even getting one child sponsored is the start of providing food, clean water, education, medical, and  knowledge to help his/her village become self sufficient... to eventually provide for themselves. Its worth it!
